Grounds & Sustainability
The property is surrounded by 2.8 hectares (6 acres) of gardens, woodland, orchard (fig, cherry & almond) and lawns. The swimming pool is private and surrounded by a paved area and rockery with established plants. There is a vegetable garden and wildlife pond. Views from the property are superb: towards the Mediterranean, over Ceret and towards the ski resorts further up the valley.
We have five electric panels which heat a 500-l tank of water in the house. This supplies us with free hot water for 10 months of the year.
There are 8 photovoltaic panels, installed 2020, which supply the house with 2.4 kW of electricity. The inverter is capable of handling more panels up to 5 kW.
The house is heated primarily with woodburning stoves, using wood that has been cut to maintain the woodland. There is backup of electric radiators.
The windows in the south-facing aspect of the house are light-resistant to keep the house cool in summer.
The house has been painted with organic paint. Outside, the land has never been treated with chemicals, not in the time we have been here, at least.
